Chapter Eighteen

Back in Philly, the following morning, Troy let himself into the condo and could hear Jackson in the kitchen. He entered wanting to greet his friend who was closer to him than a brother, but much to his surprise it wasn’t Jack, but a very shapely woman in one of Jackson’s shirts with earbuds in her ear and grooving to whatever she was listening to. He didn’t want to scare her, so he tried to ease out, but unfortunately she turned and saw him. The next thing he knew, she began to scream in his direction, and the pan that she had in her hand soon followed.

“Hey, Lady!” Troy shouted over her keen wail, ducking just time as the pan she held went sailing over his head. “Please lady, just listen for a minute!”

A second later Jackson rushed around the corner, and even he had to duck when she started throwing plates. She was still screaming, and if he didn’t know better, he’d swear that she had her eyes closed.

“Brenda! Brenda!” he shouted, dodging tableware and moving in to grab her and shake some sense into her. “It’s alright!”

She finally stopped screaming and opened her eyes, then pressed her face to Jackson’s chest. He looked at Troy and shrugged.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” Troy apologized.

“Who the hell are you?!” she snapped.

“He’s my roommate,” Jackson replied impatiently. “Remember I told you that I had one?”

She looked up at Jackson with surprise.

“I’m sorry baby, I forgot,” she whined.

Troy shook his head and went to his room. He arrived back in Philly early that morning, but maybe he should have called Jack to let him know that he was coming back. Just as he closed his bedroom door his phone beeped, and when he looked to see who it was, he shook his head. He’d been ignoring the twenty or thirty text Victoria sent not to mention the calls that stuffed his voicemail since she left Virginia but knew had to see her eventually just to let her know that he was moving to Virginia permanently. It was a meeting he was not looking forward to, but as her friend, he felt she deserved to know. He silenced the phone and put it in his pocket and pulled out his duffle bag.
